Harper's BAZAAR magazine has been in existence for decades. During this time they have worked with many fashion photographers, but none with as much influence on their magazine as Louise Dahl-Wolfe. For more than 35 years Dahl-Wolfe worked for Harper's BAZAAR, in which time she defined the face of the magazine. Dahl-Wolfe's models embraced the idea of the "New American Woman" and challenged the everyday woman to find her own strength and independance.
By pairing the forms of these women with the typography on the page, I wanted to highlight the work of Dahl-Wolfe by accentuating their strength in structure.

preFAB :: environmental design
preFAB is a hypothetical retail store selling pre-fabricated homes. The store itself is a pre-fabricated home that could show the clients coming in the quality of these homes up close. It would work as a facility from which to sell pre-fabricated homes. The identity from the signage is repeated on the interior mural seen below.
NERUDA :: a menu
Pablo Neruda won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. Considered the "champion of the everyman", Neruda wrote poetry for the masses. Seeing elegance in simplicity, his poetry was written so all could enjoy the beauty of words and be witness to the power they hold. Neruda's poetry simply asks the reader to be aware of the power of unity, as seen in the following lines from "Ode to Wine": more than the wine of life; you are the community of man.
The idea behind this project was to come up with a concept for a restaurant that had some kind of global concern that it addressed. Deciding on literacy as my global concern, the work of Pablo Neruda became my inspiration. I wanted the identity of the restaurant to appear as an abstraction coming from the pages of a book. The heavy verticals created in the identity continued throughout the menu, as the words become even more abstracted.

SWING :: a poster
Great Ladies of Jazz :: a pop-up card
I created this pop-up as a direct mailer for a hypothetical exhibit on The Great Ladies of Jazz. I really loved the idea of the microphone becoming dimensional and the women's faces highlighting the word JAZZ. While the photograph works to get the idea, the real joy happens when you hold it in your hands and open it, bringing these ladies to life!
theme :: A Literary Magazine
theme: our stories came about when deciding what I wanted to spend my final semester at the University of Georgia working on. I have always had a passion for literature and the beauty of words, and felt that I could really benefit from focusing on typography for those few months. I based this magazine off of an online journal called Our Stories, but retitled it theme.
I limited it to two type families, Caslon and Frutiger, and kept it black and white. Desiring both a contemporary and classic feel, I wanted each of the individual stories to have there own character, but to also feel a part of the whole.
I designed this promotional poster to work as a Call for Entries for the literary magazine; continuing my using of both black and white and experimenting with typography.
